Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral Cancer Screenings in Weymouth, MA

According to recent studies, 1.7 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the United States, and at least 600,000 die from it. Cancer is an incredibly dangerous disease because it attacks animals at a cellular level. It is caused by cells that fail to copy correctly, resulting in the multiplication of defunct cells that form tumors and can even shut down organs.

At Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry, we want to do our part to help our patients in Weymouth, MA, handle the realities of cancer. One of our services is the conducting of thorough oral cancer screenings on an annual basis for our patients to catch symptoms early. The goal is to begin treatment as soon as possible, so you and your loved ones have a better chance of winning your battle.

The Oral Cancer Screening

At Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry, our oral cancer screenings are designed to be efficient and thorough. The process is visual and tactile. Our dentist uses a variety of tools to check the inside of the mouth and surrounding soft tissues, including lights and their own gloved hands.

There are several symptoms they are trying to look for:

  • Sores in or outside of the mouth that hasn’t healed
  • White patches in the mouth
  • Unusual lumps or bumps
  • Areas causing pain in the mouth or near the ear
  • Loose teeth
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Red patches in the mouth

We even use a special light that will highlight unusual tissues and cells of a different color. If we suspect something is amiss, our dentist will take a sample for a biopsy to determine if the cells are cancerous or not.

Who Needs a Screening?

Unfortunately, cancer is a reality for patients of any age and background, although it is more common among the elderly. At Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry, we recommend all of our patients in Weymouth, MA receive a screening at least once a year to improve the likelihood of catching the disease.

Anyone who has even one of the following traits should get screenings more often:

  • A family history of oral cancer
  • A personal history of cancer
  • Consumes tobacco regularly
  • Drinks regularly
  • Smokes substances of any kind regularly
  • Has exposure to the sun regularly
